Indra smart pro review

The Indra Smart PRO takes smart charging to another level by letting you integrate your tariff, so it only charges at certain times for the cheapest rates.

It also has solar integration, a quick boost mode with a physical button for overriding schedules, three intelligent charge modes and one of the best apps in the business available on desktop and as a mobile app

In-built earthing and charging speeds up to 7.4kW (the maximum for single-phase) complete the package, making this a top choice for any home.

Features

The Indra's rectangular shape and Stormtrooper colour scheme set it apart from other home chargers. It's a striking looking charger, and the elongated body lets you wrap the charging cable around it - no wall hook needed.

At 420mm x 200mm x 130mm (H W D), the Indra Smart PRO is a chunky unit, but the cable holster is angled downwards, so it doesn't stick out.

The front of the charger has a BOOST button that instantly overrides schedules, letting you charge immediately at the fastest rate. There are also four LEDs on the front that provide charger status indications.

A 5m cable is supplied with tethered versions, or you can go for the untethered unit and use your own cable. Both versions are physically identical, except tethered versions have the cable permanently attached to the unit.

Build quality is excellent, and the Indra inspires confidence in use with a rock-solid feel and a high-quality cable and charger head.

The Indra can charge up to 7.4kW (30 miles of range per hour) on a single-phase supply. The minimum charge rate is 2.3kW, and the Smart PRO has power balancing to ensure that power consumption is never more than the property can handle.

The Indra Smart PRO has Ethernet and space for a 2.4/5GHz wireless USB Wi-Fi adapter or 4G dongle inside the case (available separately).

Ethernet provides a stable internet connection and eliminates the problem of a weak wireless connection. If you want to use 4G or Wi-Fi, you only need a dongle and can still use Ethernet as the primary connection type.

The Indra Smart PRO is a dream to install because it has an earth reference electrode setup for PEN faults (in-built earthing) and PESTs technology, which monitors solar power flow for fluctuations and works with the PEN fault to keep power flowing.

Like all home chargers, it needs a Type A RCD (Max 30mA), and a CT clamp monitors power flow. The charger has WAGO connectors inside instead of screw terminals, and there's lots of space to wire everything up in the case.

  • The Indra charger has solar support as standard with terminals for a solar feed, letting you divert surplus energy from microgeneration to the charger. You can charge with 100% solar in Solar mode or with a combination of grid + solar power.

The Solar Matching mode takes priority over the multi-rate tariff mode, so you must ensure that your charging sessions use as much solar energy as possible.

The Indra app provides a breakdown of power consumption with detailed analytics, letting you see how much energy you've used throughout the month.

Kaluza provides the Indra app. It's easily the best web/mobile app we've tested, with detailed charging analytics, multiple charge modes, smart schedules and the ability to integrate an energy tariff for variable prices.

Multi-rate tariff mode lets you input your tariff rates (price per kWh) for cost tracking, providing accurate costs for variable tariffs.

You can see a full history of charging sessions with charts showing costs, time plugged in, charging time, and energy used. You also get a monthly summary of the same, helping you understand your charging behaviour in detail.

The handiest feature is 'Ready by Time', which logs your battery capacity and charges at stages to charge your vehicle by a selected time. It makes use of variable tariff pricing and calculates the best charging schedule.

you can get an indication of what the charger's doing via the LED lights on the front:

  • White – scheduled charging mode
  • Blue – boost mode
  • Orange – solar mode
  • Yellow – solar matching
  • Purple flashing – booting
  • Blue flashing - updating
  • Purple flashing after boot – check the internet connection
  • Red flashing – temporary fault
  • Red – fault mode, contact Indra/installer
