Wallbox pulsar plus review

he Wallbox Pulsar Plus is one of the smallest smart home chargers on the market, a curved square that blends into its environment save for a striking LED halo ring that provides an at-a-glance status view.

the Pulsar Plus doesn’t compromise. It charges at 7.4kW, offers optional solar support, and even has Bluetooth as a Wi-Fi backup.

It features is voice control, letting you control charging sessions (including starting and pausing them) with Google Assistant or Alexa

Features

Calling the Wallbox Pulsar Plus small doesn't do it justice. The unit sticks out only 82mm from the wall, and the cable holster is angled downwards, so the charger head only sticks out beyond the charger a little (you're talking around 30mm).

Because of the case's slightly tapered shape, you can loop the charging cable around the body, although Wallbox also sells a wall cable holder as an optional extra (it costs around £35, or you can use any old wall hook).

It's available in black or white, and the front of the charger is dominated by an LED halo ring that reflects the charger's status, providing an at-a-glance view of what's happening.

  • Dimensions (mm): 166 x 163 x 82 mm (H x W x D)
  • Charging power: 1.4–7.4kW (6A - 32A), 11kW and 22kW (three-phase)
  • Earthing: Built-in
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Control: App
  • Cable length: 5m
  • Socket type: Tethered
  • Unique features: Bluetooth, voice control (Google Assistant and Alexa).
  •

The Pulsar Plus supports single-phase speeds of 7.4kW (up to 30 miles of range per hour) and three-phase speeds up to 22kW (up to 90 miles of range per hour).

If you want to install more than one Pulsar Plus, you can use Power Sharing, a standard feature that balances power between two chargers (it balances the load, so both chargers receive the same amount of power).

The Pulsar Plus connects to your home Wi-Fi, so you need a strong Wi-Fi connection to ensure uninterrupted data and control.

Another option is Bluetooth, which lets you control the charger when you are less than ten metres away and works as a handy backup to Wi-Fi.

Wallbox added solar support (Eco-Smart) in 2021 through a software update, but you need the optional Power Meter to make it work.

The Power Meter measures energy generation from the solar panels and distributes surplus energy to the charger. Full-Green mode ensures the Pulsar Plus uses 100% renewable energy, while Eco mode uses a blend of grid + solar.

  • This is one of the few home chargers with voice control, letting you start, pause and stop charging sessions and much more with Google Assistant or Alexa. It works faultlessly and brings a new dimension of smart control to your EV charging experience.

Here are some of the commands:

    • Start/pause/stop charging
    • Lock/unlock charger
    • Get charger status
    • Get monthly statistics
    • Create and delete schedules

The mywallbox app puts all charger controls in the palm of your hand. The primary way to charge is with scheduling, where you make the charger active during certain times to plug in and charge without doing anything else.

The app tracks added battery power in kWh and measures costs based on the kWh rate you input. You can lock and unlock the charger in the app, view historical charging data, and monitor charging sessions in real-time.

Uniquely, the app is available on Apple Watch and Wear OS (Google), letting you control charging sessions from your wrist.

In future updates, we'd like to see the ability to set kWh price caps for the cheapest rates and tariff integration for dynamic tariffs like Octopus Go.

The LED halo ring displays eight possible colours for status:

  • Green roulette – initialisation
  • Green – ready
  • Turquoise – standby
  • Turquoise blinking – scheduled charging ready
  • Dark blue – charging
  • Yellow – locked
  • Red – error
  • White – firmware update
  • Light blue blinking – power boost error
